ACTIVITIES THAT HELP STUDENTS WITH FLUENCY

¿How to be fluent?

First of all, we need to know what is “to be fluent”. If we look after the word fluency in a dictionary we will find some of these meanings:

  • the ability to speak or write a foreign language easily and accurately.
  • the ability to express oneself easily and articulately.

Maybe it´s easier to say it than to do it. To be fluent not only means to understand english texts, or to understand what people say. We need to improve all of our skills, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. How to do that?

  1. Reading resources with magazines and books

Sometimes, the texts that we read at school, in english books, aren´t close to our different realities. That´s why maybe you find them a Little bit boring. So, I recommend you to search magazines, or books with themes you like. For the magazines, I leave you this link: https://www.fluentu.com/blog/english/learn-english-magazine-2/, and for the books, i recommend old bookstores. There you can find good novels at a very good price.

  1. Listening resources with movies

Choose movies you already know. If you are a beginner or at a lower level, it is best to choose a movie that you have already watched, and use subtitles (spanish). The exercise here is to listen the words in english and to match them with spanish subtitles. However, if you are intermediate-high level, you should use english subtitles. With this, you can listen the pronunciation and how the words are written.

Watching movies is a very good exercise to learn how to use natural language.

  1. Speaking resources

The best option to improve your speaking skills, is talking with people with a better level, or with native speakers. It´s easy to find websites where you can chat, videocall someone, but I think the most effective way to learn is to meet those persons in real live. Here in Puebla you can find groups like “Charlas del mundo” (https://www.facebook.com/charlasdelmundo/). They meet every Wednesday night, in different places and talk with each other.

  1. Learn to think in english

My last advice for fluency is to think in english. Most of the time we translate everything we hear or read into our native language. We need to stop that. This girl can help you with this particular assignment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY2zyhDgeto
